John Z.L. Huang is a founding partner of MWE China Law Offices based in Shanghai.
John focuses his practice on international arbitration and litigation, trademarks, patents, trade secret and copyright infringement, antitrust and unfair competition, foreign direct investments, private equity and venture capital financing and general corporate law.

John was one of the four founders of AllBright Law Offices, the second largest law firm in China.  John also founded the Great Wall Law Offices in Shanghai which was sponsored by and associated with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.

During his legal career, John has handled numerous landmark transactions, including the representation of Fortune 500 companies in the establishment of foreign investment companies in the People’s Republic of China.  He also has represented numerous Chinese and international companies in securing their intellectual property rights in China.

John speaks and publishes frequently on legal issues concerning Chinese law and the information technology industry, and he is very active in organising, sponsoring and co-sponsoring international and Chinese conferences and seminars in order to facilitate better understanding of Chinese laws by foreign investors.  As one of the first members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Committee of the All China Lawyers Association, John has been invited by the WTO Committee to deliver speeches at its annual meetings.  In 2006 and 2007, John co-sponsored seminars concerning the protection of IP rights in China with various leading world organisations and institutions.  In addition, John is frequently invited by various major TV networks, including CCTV, Dragon TV and Shanghai TV networks, to speak on important legal issues, and his articles have been published in many newspapers and legal periodicals throughout China.

John has been the recipient of numerous prestigious legal awards and is recognized for his outstanding legal practice. John was named one of Asia's Leading Business Lawyers from 2000 to 2006 in IT, e-commerce, IPRs and dispute resolution.

In 2004, John was nominated by LegalBusiness, the publisher of The Asia Pacific Legal 500, as the Lawyer of the Year, an honour given to the most successful lawyer in Asia.  In 2005, John was selected by Asian Legal Business (ALB) magazine as the one of the Hot 30 Lawyers in China.  For his contributions to the legal practice in China, John was nominated as theLocal Law Firm Dealmaker of the Year in 2005.  He was identified in Asia Pacific’s Hot 100 Lawyers by ALB in 2006 and as the China Dealmaker of the Yearin 2006.

Representative Transactions

  • Successfully represented the Shanghai Stock Exchange in negotiations with IBM, HP and Accenture in building the next generation trading system (NGTS) in China, one of the most sophisticated trading platforms in the world
  • Successfully represented Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd. (SAIL) in the MSN China joint venture, which is the first joint venture in the People’s Republic of China for Microsoft that specialised in the value-added telecom services relating to certain software
  • Acted as counsel in the General Motors unfair competition litigation, which has been voted one of the most important IP litigation cases in China in the last decade and is a milestone case in China’s intellectual property field
  • Successfully represented Harvard Business School Publishing Corp. (HBSP) in its IP infringement lawsuit against a local distributor
  • Successfully represented INTEL in the establishment of its Wafer Fab, a wholly owned foreign enterprise that became one of the first batch of semiconductor corporations with foreign investment approved by the Chinese Government
  • Successfully represented the Shanghai Posts and Telecommunications Bureau and the Shanghai Information Investment Company in their negotiations with AT&T to establish the first joint venture telecom, Shanghai Symphony Telecom, after China joined WTO
  • Successfully negotiated a joint venture between Sony (U.S.), Shanghai Xin Hui Group and the Shanghai Cultural Fund, resulting in the first joint venture audio and video production company
  • Successfully represented Angang Steel, the second largest steel maker in China, in its negotiation with ThyssenKrupp AG to form various major joint venture projects throughout China
  • Successfully represented Deutsche Bank and H&Q in the Shanghai Links Project, which is regarded as one of the most complicated and high-profile projects in China to date
  • Acted as legal counsel for leading global software companies, telecom companies, semiconductor companies, automotive companies, construction machinery companies, paper companies, pharmaceutical companies, financial institutions, insurance companies and numerous famous brands from various countries
